New Amicus Head of Health appointed

Kevin Coyne pledges a robust defence of NHS members

Kevin Coyne has been promoted as Head of Health for the Amicus trade union which has 100,000 members working in the health sector.

He takes over from Gail Cartmail who has been promoted to Assistant General Secretary for Amicus Public Sector.

Kevin Coyne said: ‘I would like to thank Gail for her obvious commitment to our members working in the health service. Her tenure has been at a time of massive change, but the profile of Amicus has never been higher.’

He was previously the Regional Secretary for Amicus’s North West Region where he was responsible for a number of sectors, including health. Before that he was a Regional Officer for ten years for the former MSF union which is now part of Amicus.

He said: ‘I have come into post at a very challenging time for our hardworking members in the NHS who are facing job cuts and recruitment freezes. I will be working with colleagues in continuing to stage a robust defence of our members and the services they provide for patients and clients.’

‘Despite these problems, I am committed to developing membership services designed to improve our bargaining position and extend our already considerable influence.’

‘I strongly believe in the public service ethos of the health service and greatly deplore the current creeping privatisation of the NHS, which is not only inefficient in terms of value for money, but doesn’t deliver the high standards of care that the public have come to expect from the NHS since its formation in 1948.’
