Scotland West District Member's Annual Report for Guild Council 2000/01

Group Meetings

Attendance at 2000 AGM

The reconvened Group A.G.M. was fairly well attended with around 10 members present. The original meeting was abandoned as inquorate.

Group Meetings

Since the last annual report, there have been eight group meetings; two professional meetings, three business meetings and three social meetings. Average attendance at the meetings was around 20, with the social events being the best attended as usual and considerably raising the average.

The District Member was in attendance at most of the meetings.

The Group Committee met once to determine the syllabus for the 2000/2001 session.

Membership at March 2001 is around 280.

The Group was not represented at the Group Secretaries Day due to the election of a new Group Secretary at the reconvened AGM. There was insufficent time between the two meetings to allow attendance.

The Group was represented at the Group Delegates Meeting by the Group Chair and Secretary.

The Group was represented at the Weekend School by the District Member and one other Group member.

Thursday 23rd August 2000

A welcome barbeque aimed at pre-registration graduates failed to attract many members or potential members. However the four people there enjoyed themselves.

Thursday 5th October 2000

This was the annual ten-pin bowling competition. The winners this year were the team from the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley once again.

Thursday 16th October 2000

The Business Meeting had less than its usual low attendance. The meeting was inquorate. However, there was some useful discussion on the G.D.M. motions, and the selection of delegates. The thoughts of the members present and the selection of delegates was emailed to all reps for comment and agreement.

Thursday 9th November 2000

This was a joint meeting with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain addressed by Prof. Clare Mackie.

Thursday 1st February 2001

This was the annual quiz night, and won by a team from Gartnavel General - "Haven't the foggiest".

Thursday 1st March 2001

A very interesting meeting on the Health Technologies Board for Scotland was marred by a very poor attendance.

The one meeting of the session remaining is the A.G.M. which takes place on Thursday 29th March 2001. In addition to the AGM business, there is to be a debate on the motion that "This house believes that hospital pharmacy will survive the next decade".

Other Group Information

It is of concern that apathy within the Group is on the increase. Although meetings are held in Glasgow, frequently members from outwith the city have outnumbered those from within. Poor attendances for the professional and business meetings now appear to be the norm. The professional programme may have to be revisited in the light of all the other professional meetings from different providers including RPSGB and SCPPE.

May 2000 saw the launch of the www.ghpscot.org.uk website containing information on the Scottish Districts of the Guild. District member reports to and from Council are available on the site as are reports I have produced as Guild Secretary for Scotland. It is also possible to download a portable document format (pdf) file containing an application form for the Guild. The site is still being developed although time is at a premium.

National Information

The past year has seen an increasing workload for the Secretary for Scotland. There have been 3 meetings of the Modernisation Forum - two of them being two-day meetings with an overnight stay. I also attended the launch of 'Our National Health' The Scottish Health Plan.

The profile of the Guild in Scotland has been raised over the past year and we have also been invited to take part in the discussions on the Scottish Pharmacy Strategy and to the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Scottish Trust Chief Pharmacists.
