Scotland West District Member's Report from Guild Council Meeting 6.4.2000

Council meetings took place before the 2000 National Weekend School in Brighton. Entitled 'Practising to perfection' it was adjudged a success by all attendeees.

Administrative support
A resolution has been proposed. This would involve Carol English remaining as GHP Administrator and someone else attending Council to take minutes. There would also be secretarial support to the other subcommittees.

Professional Secretary's contract extended eventually
Ian Simpson has been reassured that his contract is to be extended. A letter which should have extended his current contract by one month until the new one was ready, unfortunately said that it was giving him one months notice! Some hurried telephone calls soon sorted it out.

MCA Prosecuting Chief Pharmacist
The MCA is still considering a criminal prosecution against a Chief Pharmacist in England as reported in February. Hospital management are supporting the pharmacist and the MSF legal department is involved. The RPSGB who would be responsible for prosecuting the community pharmacist involved in the affair have no plans to do so.

EHP
The journal of the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists is in financial difficulty. Therefore it has been decided that instead of each GHP member receiving a copy, each institution will receive one copy instead. It is hoped that this will solve some if the problems. The GHP has offered to donate £2000 to the continued existence of the journal if a solid recovery plan is made available. Although it is only oe amongst many journals in the UK, in some of the smaller European countries it is their only journal, so it is important that it survives.

MLX 260
MLX 260 on the Sale, Supply and Administration of Medicines was considered by the Practice Committee.

GDM Motions
The Professional Secretary is currently obtaining information regarding the liability of chief pharmacists, dispensary managers and supervising pharmacists for checking technician schemes. Helen Remington is looking at the competencies and training required to become dependent or independent prescribers under the Crown Report.

RPSGB Paper
Council has asked that as many members as possible complete and return the RPSGB consultation paper on professional competence and lifelong learning. There was some disquiet noted about the fact that none of the committee involved in this project are actually practising pharmacists.

Weekend School 2001
Next years National Weekend School will take place in Harrogate at the aptly named Majestic Hotel over the weekend of 6-8th April. The theme of the conference will be developing staff and the service. The Yorkshire Group will have their work cut out as the Schools get better and better.

'MSFworks'
I did not receive many calls about this, so I make no apology for repeating it. I would be grateful if you would let me have the name and address of any member who does NOT receive it. If they do not get it, it means that, as far as MSF mailings are concerned, they don't exist - or don't exist at the address MSF have. To ensure that all members have a vote on the merger with the AEEU, it is important that MSF have their correct address. Please check that all your members are getting 'MSFworks'.

Weekend School 2000
I am hoping to produce a booklet of the Weekend School to circulate to all reps and contacts. It should be available before the rescheduled AGM.
